Description
Daley Plaza, a courtyard in front of the Richard J. Daley Center (initially Chicago Civic Center) which was completed in 1965 in Chicago's Loop. It has one of Chicago's landmarks, the untitled 50 foot Cor-Ten steel Picasso sculpture gifted to the city by the artist. The sculpture like the Center was constructed using Cor-Ten, self weathering steel. This steel was designed to rust which actually strengthens the structure and gives it a characteristic reddish brown appearance. The plaza also houses an in-ground fountain and an eternal flame memorial dedicated to soldiers who lost their lives in wars from World War i through Vietnam.
